Admission

Back

We like parents to visit us before applying for the admission of their children.   Please contact the school office for an appointment.   We will arrange for a staff member to outline our philosophies and programmes, and walk you around the school.

We admit children according to vacancies and age.   In 2008 children born in 2003 are enrolled in Kindergarten, 2002 in Prep, 2001 in Grade 1 etc.

Proof of birth date is required for admission into Kindergarten.

Applications for admission are available at the school office.

We like parents and grandparents to attend our school assemblies.  Please ask for this term's times.

Attendance

Back

We are required to monitor attendance and late arrivals.

Please advise the school office by phone on the morning of absence.  Late arrivals and early departures need to sign in at the office.

Behaviour Management

Back

Our behaviour management policy is based on "AT MIANDETTA WE CARE FOR EACH OTHER AND OUR WORLD AND WE HELP EVERYONE LEARN".

We expect all our children to accept responsibility for their attitudes and actions.

We actively promote and recognise appropriate behaviour and have a hierarchy of steps and defined consequences for inappropriate behaviour.

Bells

Back

Your children should come to school after 8:30  and, unless involved in a supervised activity, leave between 2:45 and 3:00.

We have seven single bells to signal the beginning and end of lessons and breaks 9:00, 10:45, 11:00, 12:30, 12:45, 1:15 and 2:45.

Two bells are used to signify an inside day.

Continuous bells may be used for the emergency evacuation of buildings.

Bicycles

Back

Students who complete a parent permission form are able to ride their bikes to school.  A bike rack is provided next to the car park.

Kindergarten children often want to ride our scooters, tricycles and bicycles in their outside programme.  They are required to bring and wear their helmet for this.

Books

Back

Your children's pencils, pens, rulers, erasers, books etc. will be supplied by the school office or their class teachers when you pay the composite levy we charge for each enrolled child.

At the beginning of the school year a base pack is issued.  During the year class teachers add to this and also replace pencils and pens as they wear out and books when they're full.

Damaged and lost materials are not replaced.

Classes

Back

Our class groupings vary from year to year.

Each year we organize our classes according to the ratio of class teachers to enrolled children and the needs of each child.

We welcome parent input during the process on the understanding placement is the professional responsibility of the teaching staff.

When discussing and finalising your children's classes the teachers will consider such things as your views, each child's needs (eg friendships, relationships with other children, physical development, social skills, literacy and numeracy levels) and equity issues.

Committees

Back

We have a School Association Management Committee which is responsible for such things as the school's beliefs and values, policies and procedures and reviews and plans.

We have three emergency evacuation signals - continuous bells on the public address system, continuous blasts on a whistle and continuous beeps on the fire alarm system.

Your co-operation in this will be appreciated.

Homework

Back

Homework is a professional decision of each class teacher.

We see  homework as an extension of our teaching and learning programmes and an opportunity to further develop quality teacher, child, parent partnerships.

We believe homework should be appropriate to the child and limited to half an hour's work a night or two hours per week.  It may include:

  • home reading

  • research

  • spelling and word knowledge activities

  • sketching

  • handwriting exercises

  • ball skills

  • story writing

  • completing a unit of work

  • number facts practice

Homework should not preclude your children from important and valued out of school activities like music lessons, youth groups and sport.

Please contact your children's class teachers when they are unable to do set homework or experiencing difficulties.

Reporting to Parents

Back

Miandetta Primary follows the Reporting Schedule as recommended by the Reporting to Parents Taskforce.

Report Timing
Progress statement

A short report provided to inform parents about how their child is settling in to school and to advise them of any early areas of concern.

Between week five and week eleven of Term 1.
Full written report

A report providing clear, detailed information about their child’s progress and any matters that need attention.

Issuing this report at mid-year allows time for teachers and parents to assist students with problems they may have with their learning.

This report should be given to parents at either a three-way (teacher-parent-student) or two way (parent-teacher) interview.

In exceptional circumstances, the report may be sent home and a telephone interview arranged.

Between mid-July and the end of the first week of August.
Summary report

A report providing parents with brief information about their child’s end-of-year results.

There will be a final opportunity for a face-to-face interview, if required.

Between four and ten days before the end of the school year.

Safety Houses

Back

We teach the children to use Safety Houses when they feel insecure or threatened.

Safety Houses have been used by children who have been followed by cars, approached by people who made them feel uncomfortable, bullied on the way home from school, frightened by a dog and hurt.

We strongly recommend you ensure your children know where your neighbourhood Safety Houses are.  Homes display the sign on their letter boxes.  Businesses like shops have them in their windows.   THE SIGN IS NEVER USED IN A VEHICLE.
